In addition to the Rotonde de Cartier Mysterious Double Tourbillon,
Cartier’s second mystery watch unveiled this year is the Rotonde de
Cartier Mysterious Hours. Both pieces fall with the Cartier Fine
Watchmaking collection, which is the brand’s top-of-the-line, and draw
inspiration from Cartier’s history with Mystery clocks dating back to
1912. This piece is, in my view, is Cartier’s second finest achievement
for 2013 — I like the the Mysterious Double Tourbillon which, in
contrast to this piece, met standards to carry the Geneva Seal. Though
on second thought I think that the Rotonde d Cartier Perpetual Calendar Chronograph is the real star of Cartier’s offerings this year.
Nonetheless, this piece has a superb and intriguing mechanics with
elegant design. It will be offered in both white and rose gold case
(42mm), with a price of 38,500 EUR and 36,000 EUR, respectively. A
surprisingly accessible price for a piece like this, I might add.
As with the Mysterious Double Tourbillon, the hands of the caliber
9981 MC movement are mounted on sapphire discs. There is gearing which
surrounds the discs and drives them — but of course the gearing his
hidden by the dial, hence “mysterious”.
