Ferdinand Adolf Lange, at the ripe old age of 30, set up the first ever production pocket watch making workshop in a remote village in the now worldly renowned Glashütte, with a view and aim to turn 15 apprentices into accomplished watch makers.
That was on the 7th December 1845, some 100 years later, two world wars later and a reunified Germany, Lange was disbanded, merged and state controlled as such, due to the world wars and the situation in Germany, but all this led to the name A. Lange being a legend in fine timepieces.
It was not until 1990 when the great-grandson of the founder had a vision to rebuild and re-establish the brand exactly where it was founded in Glashütte. So on 7th December 1990, the name A. Lange & Söhne would once again be linked to precision watch making.
In 1994 A. Lange & Söhne presented their first collection of 4 timepieces the LANGE 1, the SAXONIA, the TOURBILLON “Pour le Mérite”, and the ARKADE. Hence Glashütte became the centre of German precision watch making once again.
The legend of watch making excellence, technical advancements and clarity of design lives on. It is still A. Lange & Söhne’s claim to create the perfect mechanical watch of the future with the visionary ideals of the past.
A key point of A. Lange & Söhne is the superb craftsmanship, every part of a movement is decorated with its very own finissage technique, whether or not it is visible through the sapphire-crystal case back of the watch. Additionally, as these finishing touches are applied by hand, Lange’s finishers endow each timepiece with their personal signature.
The exceptional product and design quality embodied in Lange watches has earned the company more than 140 international awards.
Great strides for a brand only rejuvenated some 20 years ago but with 167 years of history and heritage.
And an outstanding quote from the re-founder “There’s something one should expect not only of a watch, but also of oneself: To never stand still.” Walter Lange
